Dalian or Dairen, city (1990 est. pop. 2,400,000), S Liaoning prov., NE China, on the Liaodong peninsula. The city, centered on the harbor that employs 13% of its population, is China's third largest foreign-trade port. Dalian produces ships, diesel engines, machine tools, chemicals, and textiles and is a major fishing center. The municipality of Lüda comprises Dalian, Lüshun (the former Port Arthur, an important naval center), and surrounding areas. |
